Dog-friendly UK breaks and trips abroad

Dog-friendly trips, with the dog rules checked.

Where to stay, which beaches allow dogs and when, and which pubs let dogs in, with the dog charge, the dog limit and the small print from each place's own website.

Dog-friendly Whitby

Dogs can go on Tate Hill Sands and the beaches at Robin Hood's Bay and Runswick Bay all year, and on most of the West Cliff sands outside the summer ban zone. They travel free on the train into town and can go round the abbey on a lead.

Dogs on the move

Trains, ferries, beaches and hills

The guides cover the journey too: which trains take dogs, what each Channel crossing charges per pet, and which beaches dogs can use in summer.

  • A white terrier looking out of a carriage window on the Welsh Highland Railway, with Caernarfon - Beddgelert - Aberglaslyn on the carriage board
  • The P&O ferry Spirit of France leaving Dover Harbour for Calais on a calm evening

  • A dog walker and three dogs far off on the long empty sands at Brora in the Highlands, in early morning sun

From the UK

Taking the dog abroad

Dog and pet passports from the UK

A pet passport from Great Britain no longer gets a dog into the EU. You need an animal health certificate per trip, a microchip, rabies vaccine and tapeworm treatment.

  • A large cross-Channel car ferry sailing out past the harbour wall at the Port of Dover

Ferry, Eurotunnel or Eurostar with a dog

Where your dog travels on each Channel, North Sea and Irish Sea crossing, what each operator charges per pet, and what is checked at the port. Eurostar takes no pet dogs.

    Taking your dog to France

Taking a dog to France from the UK: SNCF train rules, cafes and hotels, summer beach bans, category 1 and 2 dogs, and booking the tapeworm vet before home.

Why trust it

How we check

Every dog rule comes from the place's own website, the council or gov.uk, and every page lists its sources with the date we checked them. If a place doesn't say, we write "Not published" rather than guess.
